Dear Pro-life Friend:
At Notre Dame - with your help - we were able to get the world to focus on Obama's radical promotion of child-killing. We need to carry that momentum forward.
The next phase of this battle has arrived. Sonia Sotomayor - an "activist judge" by her own admission - was nominated for the Supreme Court today by President Obama.
(In a moment, I will invite you to DC, for special pro-life leadership training on June 12-14, on 4 key strategies we will employ to defeat this nominee, as well as strategies for you to use in your area on any pro-life fight you find.)
In case you have any doubt as to Sotomayor's commitment to continue the holocaust of the unborn, look at the ringing endorsement of the arch abortionists, the National Organization of Women (NOW). They released this statement within moments of the press conference:
NOW Cheers President Obama's Reported Nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to Supreme Court.
Statement of NOW President Kim Gandy,
"This morning we will celebrate, and this afternoon NOW will launch our "Confirm Her" campaign to ensure the swift confirmation of the next Supreme Court Justice.
"Nominated to serve as the third woman and first Hispanic on the Supreme Court in the history of the United States, Judge Sotomayor will serve the nation with distinction. She brings a lifelong commitment to equality, justice and opportunity, as well as the respect of her peers, unassailable integrity, and a keen intellect informed by experience. President Obama said he wanted a justice with "towering intellect" and a "common touch" and he found both in Judge Sotomayor."
Have no Doubt: NOW representatives have met with Sotomayor, and have been assured that she will keep the killing fields open. There is NO CHANCE - in hell or on earth - that the NOW would endorse her if they were not 100% certain that she will uphold Roe vs. Wade. They NEVER have, and they NEVER will.
And of course, the infamous quote by Sotomayor is there for all to see:
"...all of the legal defense funds out there, they're looking for people with Court of Appeals experience, because it is--Court of Appeals is where policy is made. And I know, and I know this is on tape and I should never say that..."
There it is: She believes she should make policy. And what "policy" do the child-killers at the N.O.W. want more than all else: the ability to kill children in utero.
Obama's people were very clever; they choose someone who does not have a lot of printed material.
Now is the time for us to fight this nomination.
Contact 2 Key Democrat Senators to filibuster Sotomayor
We must not watch history be made; we must make history. It will be an uphill battle, but it is very possible to get her nomination derailed with a filibuster.
We will need the help of two pro-life Democrats:
Senator Nelson (NE) and Senator Casey (PA).
Both of them have repeatedly stated they are pro-life; now both of them have to choose between loyalty to God and the innocent, or loyalty to Party and President - who are committed to killing the innocent.
We will inundate GOP Senators with calls, faxes, etc. But we will need a little help: These two pro-life Democrats are key.
So, while the ink of this news is still wet, your first assignment is this: go to www.tellnelson.com, and www.tellcasey.com for their contact info. Call them right away, and firmly yet politely tell them you expect them to join a Republican filibuster against this nominee.
Also, forward this to your friends, and ask them to sign the petition; when they sign the petition, I can stay in touch with them, and give them fresh marching orders as this fight unfolds.

HP: Ben Nelson Tougher On Obama's Nominees Than Bush's
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/14/ben-nelson-tougher-on-oba_n_203447.html
Sen. Ben Nelson's opposition to President Obama's choice to head the Justice Department Office of Legal Counsel appears to be the key obstacle to her confirmation. Democrats say Dawn Johnsen, an Indiana University law professor, has 59 backers in the Senate -- just one vote shy of cloture. Nelson, a Nebraska Democrat, is standing firmly against her appointment, pointing to Johnsen's job 15 years ago as a counsel to the abortion rights group NARAL.
All of which has left Nelson's critics furious. Where was the principled opposition from the Senator during the Bush years? Why is he refusing to show Obama the same deference that he offered the previous administration?
The votes, they argue tell the story. Nelson supported cloture or confirmation for some of Bush's most controversial judges and political nominees, including several who were never able to be confirmed even under a GOP-controlled Senate. Moreover, Nelson often defended his positions by citing presidential prerogative.
"The president's nominees, especially to the Supreme Court, deserve an up-or-down vote," he said of the nominating process, "even if the nominee isn't popular with the special-interest groups in Washington."
Indeed, Nelson voted for cloture twice on former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton and once for former EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson.
He backed the nominations of Samuel Alito and John Roberts to the Supreme Court, as well as John Ashcroft and Alberto Gonzales to the Attorney General post.
He supported cloture for the nomination of Miguel Estrada to the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit on seven separate occasions.
He did the same three times for the nomination of then Alabama Attorney General Bill Pryor to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, before ultimately supporting confirmation as well.
In one of the very few cases where Nelson voted against a Bush nominee -- Priscilla Owen (whose nomination nearly led to the "nuclear option" in the Senate) -- he did so only after backing cloture first, though this was part of the deal struck by the Gang of 14. Nelson even voted against cloture on one of the judges excluded from that bipartisan deal: Henry Saad, whose nomination to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit was ultimately defeated.
Nelson's history of support for Bush appointees is enough to produce heavy cynicism from his own party members when he discusses his opposition to Johnsen now. And in conversations with several Democratic strategists, a few theories were put forward. The first: that Nelson is likely waiting on some sort of quid-pro-quo from the Obama White House in exchange for his vote. After all, during the stimulus debate he was one of the last remaining hold outs, securing in the process some changes to the overall package. The second: that this is payback. As reported by Ryan Grim, the White House has bucked Nelson on one of his top legislative priorities, maintaining government support for the large student lending firms based in his state.
Nelson's office did not immediately return a request for comment.
Dear Senator Nelson,
NUL and I wish to commend you on your staunch stand against the appointment of Ms. Johnsen as head of the Department of Justice.
We encourage you to stand firm for your conviction for the respect for all human life, born and unborn.

April 29, 2009
As you may know, President Bush's policy was to allow funding for research that involved embryonic stem cells taken from human embryos so long as the cells were obtained on or prior to August 9, 2001. Since then, the government has funded research on over 22 stem cell lines. President Bush's policy erected a wall and did not encourage the further killing of human embryos for their cells.
However, on March 9, 2009 President Barack Obama issued an executive order that overturned President Bush's policy and opened the floodgates for funding more embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) that creates an incentive to create and destroy human embryos. President Obama designated the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to draft guidelines for distributing funds for this research. Last week, April 23, NIH officially posted draft guidelines to open federal funding for research on human embryonic stem cells. What these guidelines do is send your tax dollars to experiment on stem cells taken from human embryos that supposedly are "leftover" from in vitro fertilization. Instead of promoting the adoption of these human embryos, these draft guidelines would require their death.
The public comment period on these draft regulations is 30 days, and we ask that you submit comments to oppose these regulations on or before May 26, 2009. To submit your comment, please go to this website and fill out the form with your comment.
Please submit your comment directly to the National Institutes of Health by May 26, 2009 to oppose use of federal funds for research on human embryonic stem cells.
Sincerely,
Tony Perkins

RE: Comments in Lincoln Journal Star article, 5/7/09 by
UNMC’s Dr. James Turpen
Dear Regent:
Today’s Lincoln Journal Star has an article entitled, “UNMC to Co-Host First Science Café in Lincoln on May 14.” I have forwarded a copy of the article to you for your perusal. What is most concerning to us are the comments by UNMC’s Dr. James Turpen in discussing the need for the Science Cafes.
His quote: “A public armed with facts and understanding of science is better able to appreciate and apply scientific advances and to vote knowledgeably on ballot issues and initiatives related to science.” said UNMC’s James Turpen, Ph.D., the leader of the science literacy team.
The article also noted that in addition to UNMC, the Science Café programs are hosted by the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures (formerly Nebraskans for Research) and Bio Nebraska. (Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures has an opposite position to the pro-life position on unethical medical research. Bio Nebraska has taken an official policy to leave medical research unfettered.)
In September, 2006, Nebraska Right to Life took issue with comments made by then-NU Regent Drew Miller. An LJS article on 9/10/06 noted that Miller had20stated at the September, 2006 Regents meeting that that Board should “discuss whether it should favor a petition-initiated constitutional amendment that would protect embryonic stem cell research.” He is also quoted, “It’s just a matter of time. We ought to fight this battle as a constitutional amendment, not in the Legislature.”
Nebraska Right to Life’s response in that same 9/10/06 LJS article was to note that the current Missouri initiative petition drive was being orchestrated to confuse Missouri voters into thinking they would ban cloning by voting for the initiative when in fact, that ballot measure enshrined cloning for research purposes into the Missouri Constitution. My quote from the article, “UNMC wants the unfettered ability to do what they want to do. If biotech interests can do an end run in a conservative state like Missouri, they can do it here.”
At the time Nebraska Right to Life sent out a mailing citing Miller’s comments and warning that we needed to be vigilant that UNMC could=2 0also get around the legislative process by going directly to the people. While pro-lifers are folks who embrace the initiative petition and referendum process available to us in this state, we also know that those who have the most money can frame and influence an initiative debate and ultimately prevail, as happened in Missouri. Many Missourians truly thought they were banning cloning by voting for that initiative when the exact opposite was true. The bio-tech interests in Missouri massively out-spent the pro-life forces and were able to frame the debate to make it most appealing, yet deceptive.
We believe Dr. Turpen’s comments in today’s LJS could mirror the true desire of UNMC. Without voiding the legislative agreement made by both sides with the passage of LB 606 in 2008, UNMC, or more likely it’s mouthpiece, Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, could legitimately pursue an initiative petition ballot measure backed by their substantially well-funded private partners and enshrine the same kind of unfettered bio-medical research in Nebraska which has been accomplished in Missouri.
For that reason we believe it is imperative that the NU Regents A: act on a policy regarding bio-medical research and B: inquire of UNMC if it has intentions of fostering a ballot petition drive in 2010 or 2012 to address research issues.
Respectfully,
Julie Schmit-Albin
