How does MAP (plan B) work?
There are three ways that MAP work.

1. By suppressing ovulation (female egg production in the ovary)
2. By thickening mucous in the cervix which blocks sperm passage
3. By making the lining of the uterus hostile to implantation and causing an abortion.

It is, of course, the last point that is of the highest concern, especially for people who value human life. Which leads us to a very important question. Reardon, D. "The Best Kept (ugly little) Secret in America." The Post Abortion Review 6(4) Sept-Dec. 1998

Is MAP contraception or abortion?
Women who choose to use MAP will never know which has happened, because MAP can be both. If a woman has not yet ovulated, MAP works as a contraceptive by suppressing ovulation. However, if she has become pregnant, but the embryo has not yet implanted, the use of MAP is an abortion. Chemicals such as these that cause abortion are called "abortifacients."

Do Planned Parenthood and the FDA say it's not an abortifacient?
Yes on both counts. However, in order to say this, "when life begins" had to be redefined to fit the purpose. In an effort to make MAP more acceptable to the general public, the well-known truth about when life begins is simply ignored. If you " change the rules" and say life begins not at conception (fertilization), but implantation 7-10 days later), now MAP is not an abortifacient drug. But is this true or just changing truth to fit the situation?

WANT MORE INFO?
COME BY THE OFFICE FOR A GREAT BROCHURE AND ITEMS IN OUR FILES.
# FDA says one abortion pill death unrelated:
One of two recent deaths of women taking the abortion pill RU-486 was unrelated to an abortion or use of the drug, but the second case is still under investigation, U.S. regulators said on Monday.

# Congressman Ratchets Up Campaign Against Abortion Drug:
WASHINGTON With two new deaths linked to the abortion drug RU-486, the leading congressional opponent to the drug stepped up his call to yank it off the market, saying manufacturers have made pregnancy 'a near fatal disease.'
At his news conference Wednesday, Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, R-Md., held aloft a picture of 18-year-old Holly Patterson, who died after taking the drug. He urged an immediate vote on his bill, HR 1079, 'Holly's Law,' which would force the Food and Drug Administration to remove the drug from the market for further investigation

# Massachusetts Demands Wal-Mart Stock Morning After Pill:
BOSTON The state board that oversees pharmacies voted Tuesday to require Wal-Mart to stock emergency contraception pills at its Massachusetts pharmacies, a spokeswoman at the Department of Public Health said.

# Two die after RU-486 abortion pill:
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Two women reportedly died after using the RU-486 abortion pills, US drug regulators said without having confirmed the causes of the deaths.
The Food and Drug Administration said that the manufacturer, Danco Laboratories, had reported the deaths and that the FDA was investigating.

# Walmart To Carry 'Morning After Pill':
Walmart says they have changed their minds and do plan to carry the 'The Morning After Pill' in all of their stores' pharmacies across the country.
If taken within the first five days after unprotected sex, the pill can prevent unintended pregnancy. But until Friday, you could only get it at the Walmart pharmacies in Massachusetts and Illinois, where stores were required to stock it.
8 News contacted Walmart who previously refused to sell the pill locally about their change in policy. They would not speak to us on camera but did release this statement.
'We expect more states to require us to sell the emergency contraceptives in the months ahead, because of this and the fact this is an FDA approved product, we feel it is difficult to justify being the country's only major pharmacy chain not selling it.'

# Target Fires Pharmacist in Missouri over Morning-After Pill; Americans United for Life Files EEOC Complaint (PRESS RELEASE):
To: State and City Desks
Contact: Daniel McConchie or Erin Cox of the Americans United for Life, 312-492-7234
ST. LOUIS, Jan. 26 /U.S. Newswire/ --
Pharmacist Heather Williams has been fired from her job at Target after Planned Parenthood threatened to boycott the chain because of her employment.
During the five years of her employment, Ms. Williams had conscientiously objected to being required to dispense the morning-after pill, a drug that the manufacturer says can cause the abortion of an early human embryo. Target had always accommodated her objection and dispensed the drug to their customers without Ms. Williams involvement. Under the threat of a Planned Parenthood boycott, the chain decided to cease protecting her right of conscience and terminate her employment.
Americans United for Life has filed an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) complaint on behalf of Heather Williams, alleging that Target discriminated against her based upon her religious beliefs and desire to exercise her conscience.
Edward R. Martin, Jr., the Americans United for Life attorney representing Heather Williams, stated, "This incident illustrates the spreading intolerance that groups like Planned Parenthood have for those who disagree with their agenda. No longer are they content to promote their views in their clinics and state legislatures. Now they want private businesses to fire innocent employees who just don't want to be involved in their agenda."
Martin continued, "Ms. William's termination makes it clear that states like Missouri must pass laws that specifically offer conscience protection for pharmacists, like those that already exist for doctors and nurses. Without such laws, special interest groups will continue to work to overturn policies in private companies, breeding intolerance and coercion."
The Target action follows the firing of at least five Walgreens pharmacists in Illinois after Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich issued a rule forcing pharmacies to dispense the morning-after pill.
Heather Williams has been a pharmacist for more than 16 years, five of those years with Target. She lives in St. Charles, Missouri and is the mother of three young children.
# Nevada Pharmacy Board won't decide conscience rule:
RENO, Nev. State regulators have abandoned a plan to formally authorize Nevada pharmacists to deny a prescription based on moral grounds. The Nevada Board of Pharmacy decided yesterday to leave the controversial matter up to the state legislature.
The panel had been considering a new regulation that would make it clear a pharmacist can refuse a prescription if they are able to find another way for the patient to get the medicine.

# Planned Parenthood protests Target's Plan B policy::
Target Corp. is defending its policy on filling prescriptions for emergency contraception after the Planned Parenthood Federation of America accused the retailer of disrespecting customers' reproductive rights. Target allows pharmacists to choose not to fill requests for emergency contraception, also known as Plan B, if it is against their religious beliefs.

# FDA rejects over the counter move for Plan B

# Be grateful to FDA (Editorial on FDA decision)
Fallout over the FDA decision keep the "Morning After" pill available only by prescription
Note:
The most interesting thing about this story is how it is being reported. The wording for the eye catching headlines is not subtle. The San Francisco Chronicle reports it as a probe, as if documents are currently being shredded at some government office. The Chicago Tribune reports the "Brass Squashed" it and the USA Today online edition tags it with the line, "unusual" (they should know, one of their main stories today was (Heidi) Fleiss plans makeover for Nevada brothel). Even Fox News would not be left out with the headline "FDA Didn't follow procedures."
Alito distances self from abortion stance:
Democrats who met with high court nominee Samuel Alito said he told them he was 'wiser' now than in 1985 when seeking a job in the Reagan administration and making conservative statements on abortion.

U.S. Supreme Court to hear Wisconsin Right to Life case in 2006:
A Wisconsin Right to Life case is set to be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court early next year.
Barbara Lyons, executive director of the Wisconsin Right To Life, said in a visit to the Northwoods Tuesday that the case is against the Federal Election Commission and is asking for an exception to the McCain Feingold bill for lobbying.

She said the bill contains a blackout period prior to hearings that prohibits lobbying groups to speak to their legislators.

"We believe this is a violation of our right to petition the government on issues important to us," said Lyons. Her other concern is that Gov. Jim Doyle has vetoed, and is expected to veto, pro-life legislation.

AB 138, regarding unborn child pain awareness, indicates a woman seeking an abortion who is at least 20 weeks pregnant must be told the unborn child could experience pain. AB 138 passed the assembly this week and has passed the senate.
LB57 Quickcourse
This bill, introduced by Mike Foley, provides criminal penalties for any person who commits an act of violence against a pregnant woman which results in serious bodily injury to her unborn child. Previous legislation on this topic provided criminal penalties only for a death of an unborn child - not non-fatal injuries to the unborn child. According to Foley, at least 15 other states have such laws protecting the unborn.
This legislation is getting a lot of opposition. Prayers, phone calls and letters are uregntly needed!!!

Many states including Nebraska also have Fetal Homocide Laws.

Current headlines
Fetal Assault Bill Passed:
A bill that makes it a crime to harm a human fetus has won final approval in the Unicameral.
Under the measure, intentionally causing serious injury to an unborn child will be a felony punishable by 20 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
Dear Friends:

Within a day or so, the Nebraska Legislature will vote on:

LB 57 - "The Assault of the Unborn Child Act".

We write today to beg for your prayers, spiritual sacrifices and political action for the successful passage of this important legislation. We are expecting an extremely difficult battle.

This bill provides criminal penalties for any person who commits an act of violence against a pregnant woman which results in serious bodily injury to her unborn child. Previous legislation on this topic provided criminal penalties only for a death of an unborn child - not non-fatal injuries to the unborn child.

LB 57 addresses this legal deficiency.

Please pray that Our Lord will bless our pro-life legislative work.

Thank you very much.

News on Judge Samuel Alito:

Senate confirms Bush nominee Alito to US Supreme Court:
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Senate confirmed conservative judge Samuel Alito to the US Supreme Court, handing President George W. Bush a major victory in his bid to steer the US high court to the right.
The largely party-line vote was 58 to 42 in the Republican-dominated Senate.
Alito, 55, a federal appeals court judge, fills the seat vacated by departing justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who was the first woman ever seated on the court.

Republicans Clear the Way for Alito Vote:
Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito enjoys sufficient bipartisan support to surmount any Senate filibuster attempt by minority Democrats, members of both parties indicated Friday.
A final vote making the New Jersey jurist the nation's 110th Supreme Court justice is scheduled for Tuesday, hours before President Bush gives his State of the Union address to Congress and the nation.
Democrats and Republicans both said that the 55-year-old conservative jurist will get more than the 60 votes need to cut off debate on the Senate floor Monday. 'Next Tuesday, a bipartisan majority will vote to confirm Judge Alito as Justice Alito,' said Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.

Alito says views on abortion no factor:
WASHINGTON -- Despite recently unearthed documents showing his strong opposition to abortion two decades ago, Judge Samuel Alito said Friday that his personal views on the socially divisive subject 'would not be a factor' if he is confirmed as a Supreme Court justice.
In response to alarms raised by liberal critics about Alito's attempts to bolster abortion restrictions in the mid-1980s, Alito responded to questions about his decades-old writings from Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), who then relayed the answers to reporters.

Alito abortion stance proving tough to pin down:
His mother may know best, but conservatives don't share her certainty that Samuel Alito would overturn abortion rights.
Alito's independent streak is complicating what might otherwise be an easy call as people on both sides of the abortion divide try to figure out his likely course if he were confirmed by the Senate for the Supreme Court.
The nominee's 90-year-old mother, Rose Alito, has said of her Catholic son that 'of course, he's against abortion.' But that is her personal understanding, which is not always an accurate indicator of how a justice would vote.
'If you asked me to guess what Sam thought about abortion, it's probably the same thing his mother said,' said Joshua I. Schwartz, a professor at George Washington Law School who worked with Alito in the Solicitor General's Office during the Reagan administration.
'But obviously there is a real difference between what Sam Alito thinks is what's right and what's wrong and what does he think the law should be,' Schwartz said

Alito distances self from abortion stance:Democrats who met with high court nominee Samuel Alito said he told them he was 'wiser' now than in 1985 when seeking a job in the Reagan administration and making conservative statements on abortion.

On abortion, a nuanced stand:In 3 of 4 cases, Supreme Court nominee Alito voted on the side of abortion rights.
Quickcourse on Judge Samuel A. Alito.

Bush Picks Alito for Supreme Court:WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush, stung by the collapse of his previous choice, nominated veteran judge Samuel Alito on Monday in a bid to reshape the Supreme Court and mollify his conservative allies. Ready-to-rumble Democrats warned that Alito may be an extremist who would curb abortion rights.
'Judge Alito .... has more prior judicial experience than any Supreme Court nominee in more than 70 years,' Bush said, drawing an unspoken contrast to his recent choice, Harriet Miers.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Penn., a supporter of abortion rights, said that Alito's views 'will be among one of the first items Judge Alito and I will discuss.'Unlike Miers' nomination, which was derailed Thursday by Bush's conservative allies, Alito faces vocal opposition from Democrats.
Life Advocacy Briefing: Special Edition
President Bush selects Samuel Alito

Samuel Alito Jr. brief overview by U.S. News:
In 1997, Alito authored the majority opinion upholding a city's right to stage a holiday display that included a Nativity scene and a menorah because the city also included secular symbols and a banner emphasizing the importance of diversity. In Planned Parenthood v. Casey, Alito was the sole dissenter on the Third Circuit, which struck a Pennsylvania law that required women seeking abortions to consult their husbands. He argued that many of the potential reasons for an abortion, such as 'economic constraints, future plans, or the husbands' previously expressed opposition . . . may be obviated by discussion prior to abortion.' The case went on to the Supreme Court, which upheld the lower court's decision 6 to 3.

President Nominates Judge Samuel A. Alito as Supreme Court Justice

8:01 A.M. EST
THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. I'm pleased to announce my nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito, Jr., as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Judge Alito is one of the most accomplished and respected judges in America, and his long career in public service has given him an extraordinary breadth of experience.

President George W. Bush announces his nomination Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, of Judge Samuel A. Alito, Jr., as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. In making his announcement, President Bush said, "Judge Alito is one of the most accomplished and respected judges in America, and his long career in public service has given him an extraordinary breadth of experience." White House photo by Paul Morse As a Justice Department official, federal prosecutor and judge on the United States Court of Appeals, Sam Alito has shown a mastery of the law, a deep commitment of justice, and a -- and he is a man of enormous character. He's scholarly, fair-minded and principled, and these qualities will serve our nation well on the highest court of the land.

Judge Alito showed great promise from the beginning in studies at Princeton and Yale Law School; as editor of the Yale Law Journal; as a clerk for a federal court of appeals judge. He served in the Army Reserves and was honorably discharged as a captain. Early in his career, Sam Alito worked as a federal prosecutor and handled criminal and civil matters for the United States. As assistant to the solicitor general, he argued 12 cases before the Supreme Court, and has argued dozens of others before the federal courts of appeals.

He served in the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel providing constitutional advice for the President and the executive branch. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan named him the United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey, the top prosecutor in one of the nation's largest federal districts, and he was confirmed by unanimous consent by the Senate. He moved aggressively against white-collar and environmental crimes, and drug trafficking, and organized crime, and violation of civil rights.

In his role, Sam Alito showed a passionate commitment to the rule of law, and he gained a reputation for being both tough and fair. In 1990, President Bush nominated Sam Alito, at the age of 39, for the United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. Judge Alito's nomination received bipartisan support and he was again confirmed by unanimous consent by the United States Senate. Judge Alito has served with distinction on that court for 15 years and now has more prior judicial experience than any Supreme Court nominee in more than 70 years.

Judge Alito's reputation has only grown over the span of his service. He has participated in thousands of appeals and authored hundreds of opinions. This record reveals a thoughtful judge who considers the legal matter -- merits carefully and applies the law in a principled fashion. He has a deep understanding of the proper role of judges in our society. He understands that judges are to interpret the laws, not to impose their preferences or priorities on the people.

With President George W. Bush looking on, Judge Samuel A. Alito acknowledges his nomination Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. White House photo by Paul Morse In the performance of his duties, Judge Alito has gained the respect of his colleagues and attorneys for his brilliance and decency. He's won admirers across the political spectrum. I'm confident that the United States Senate will be impressed by Judge Alito's distinguished record, his measured judicial temperament, and his tremendous personal integrity. And I urge the Senate to act promptly on this important nomination so that an up or down vote is held before the end of this year.

Today, Judge Alito is joined by his wife, Martha, who was a law librarian when he first met her. Sam and I both know you can't go wrong marrying a librarian. Sam and Martha's two children, Phil and Laura, are also with us, and I know how proud you are of your dad today. I'm sure, as well, that Judge Alito is thinking of his mom, Rose, who will be 91 in December. And I know he's thinking about his late father. Samuel Alito, Sr., came to this country as an immigrant child from Italy in 1914, and his fine family has realized the great promise of our country.

Judge, thanks for agreeing to serve, and congratulations on your nomination.

JUDGE ALITO: Thank you, Mr. President. Thank you very much, Mr. President. I am deeply honored to be nominated to serve on the Supreme Court, and I am very grateful for the confidence that you have shown in me.

The Supreme Court is an institution that I have long held in reverence. During my 29 years as a public servant, I've had the opportunity to view the Supreme Court from a variety of perspectives -- as an attorney in the Solicitor General's Office, arguing and briefing cases before the Supreme Court, as a federal prosecutor, and most recently for the last 15 years as a judge of the Court of Appeals. During all of that time, my appreciation of the vital role that the Supreme Court plays in our constitutional system has greatly deepened.

I argued my first case before the Supreme Court in 1982, and I still vividly recall that day. I remember the sense of awe that I felt when I stepped up to the lectern. And I also remember the relief that I felt when Justice O'Connor -- sensing, I think, that I was a rookie -- made sure that the first question that I was asked was a kind one. I was grateful to her on that happy occasion, and I am particularly honored to be nominated for her seat.

My most recent visit to the Supreme Court building was on a very different and a very sad occasion: It was on the occasion of the funeral of Chief Justice William Rehnquist. And as I approached the Supreme Court building with a group of other federal judges, I was struck by the same sense of awe that I had felt back in 1982, not because of the imposing and beautiful building in which the Supreme Court is housed, but because of what the building, and, more importantly, the institutions stand for -- our dedication as a free and open society to liberty and opportunity, and, as it says above the entrance to the Supreme Court, "equal justice under law."

President George W. Bush announces his nomination Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, of Philadelphia Appeals Court Judge Samuel A. Alito, Jr., for Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, to replace the retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. White House photo by Paul Morse Every time that I have entered the courtroom during the past 15 years, I have been mindful of the solemn responsibility that goes with service as a federal judge. Federal judges have the duty to interpret the Constitution and the laws faithfully and fairly, to protect the constitutional rights of all Americans, and to do these things with care and with restraint, always keeping in mind the limited role that the courts play in our constitutional system. And I pledge that if confirmed I will do everything within my power to fulfill that responsibility.

I owe a great deal to many people who have taught me over the years about the law and about judging, to judges before whom I have appeared, and to colleagues who have shown me with their examples what it means to be a fair and conscientious and temperate judge.

I also owe a great deal, of course, to the members of my family. I wish that my father had lived to see this day. He was an extraordinary man who came to the United States as a young child, and overcame many difficulties and made many sacrifices so that my sister and I would have opportunities that he did not enjoy.

As the President mentioned, my mother will be celebrating her 91st birthday next month. She was a pioneering and very dedicated public school teacher who inspired my sister and me with a love of learning. My wife, Martha, has been a constant source of love and support for the past 20 years. My children, Philip and Laura, are the pride of my life and they have made sure that being a judge has never gone to my head -- they do that very well on a, pretty much, daily basis. And my sister, Rosemary, has always been a great friend and an inspiration as a great lawyer, and as a strong and independent person.

I look forward to working with the Senate in the confirmation process. Mr. President, thank you, once again, for the confidence that you've shown in me and for honoring me with this nomination.

Call to Action

Life Advocacy endorses the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the United States Supreme Court. We urge readers to contact United States Senators to advocate his confirmation. Senators can be contacted via the Capitol switchboard at 1-202/224-3121.

Despite Judge Alito’s outstanding credentials, his confirmation promises to be a tough fight, but it is a fight worth having and a fight worth winning.

Though we acknowledge that the most effective communications are from constituents to their own state’s Senators, we recognize that each Senator’s vote in confirmation of a Supreme Court justice has profound consequences for every citizen of the United States, regardless of state of residence.

Consequently, we urge readers to contact first their own state’s two Senators and then as many as possible of the following:

John McCain (R-AZ)
Blanche Lincoln & Mark Pryor (D-AR)
Ken Salazar (D-CO)
Joseph Lieberman (D-CT)
Bill Nelson (D-FL)
Evan Bayh (D-IN)
Mary Landrieu (D-LA)
Susan Collins & Olympia Snowe (R-ME)
Max Baucus (D-MT)
Ben Nelson (D-NE)
Kent Conrad & Byron Dorgan (D-ND)
Jeff Bingaman (D-NM)
Lincoln Chafee (R-RI)
John Warner (R-VA)
Robert Byrd & Jay Rockefeller (D-WV)
Below is Life Advocacy’s response to the Alito nomination, posted October 31, 2005, on www.lifeadvocacy.com.

Life Advocacy Resource Project congratulates President George W. Bush on his nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the United States Supreme Court and urges readers of this page to contact United States Senators (1-202/224-3121) to advocate his confirmation. It promises to be a tough fight but a fight worth having.

Of all those prospects said to have been considered by President Bush for the nomination to succeed Justice Sandra O’Connor, Judge Alito comes closest to the judicial philosophy of Justice Antonin Scalia, considered by many among the top conservative intellectuals in contemporary America. Judge Alito, according to an analytical report by Ron Fournier in the Associated Press, published Monday, October 31, is "polite, reserved and even-tempered."

Judge Alito has a solid record, during his 15 years as a federal Judge of the Philadelphia-based 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals, of fidelity to the Constitution. President Bush stated, "Judge Alito has served with distinction on that court for 15 years and now has more prior judicial experience than any Supreme Court nominee in more than 70 years." Pres. Bush cited his "passionate commitment to the rule of law."

Again quoting AP’s Ron Fournier: "Judicial conservatives praise Alito’s 15 years on the Philadelphia-based court, a tenure that gives him more appellate experience than almost any previous Supreme Court nominee. They say his record shows a commitment to a strict interpretation of the Constitution, ensuring that the separation of powers and checks and balances will be respected and enforced. They also contend that Alito has been a powerful voice for the First Amendment’s guarantees of free speech and the free exercise of religion. Liberal groups, on the other hand, " say his nomination raises troubling concerns, especially when it comes to his record on civil rights and reproductive rights."

A June 23 Wall Street Journal profile of various Supreme Court nominee prospects, written by staff reporters Jeanne Cummings and Jess Bravin, notes that Judge Alito’s (often dissenting) "opinions have attracted notice, including a 1991 vote to uphold all restrictions to abortion in a Pennsylvania law, including a requirement that a woman inform her husband that she is seeking an abortion. In other opinions, Judge Alito upheld the placement of religious symbols in holiday displays at City Hall in Jersey City, NJ." In the Pennsylvania abortion decision, Judge Alito cast the lone dissent on the spousal notification provision that was eventually invalidated by the US Supreme Court in its Casey decision. Judge Alito wrote at the time, quoted Oct. 31 by AP, "The Pennsylvania legislature could have rationally believed that some married women are initially inclined to obtain an abortion without their husbands’ knowledge because of perceived problems" such as economic constraints, future plans or the husbands’ previously expressed opposition " that may be obviated by discussion prior to the abortion." Chief Justice William Rehnquist, reports Mr. Fournier, "cited Judge Alito’s reasoning in his own dissent" to the 6-to-3 ruling striking down that Pennsylvania provision.

Before joining the appellate bench in 1990, Judge Alito served as US Attorney for the District of New Jersey from 1987 to 1990, as Deputy Asst. US Attorney General from 1985 to 1987, as Assistant to the US Solicitor General from 1981 to 1985, as Asst. US Attorney for the District of New Jersey from 1977 to 1981, and as law clerk to 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Leonard J. Garth from 1976 to 1977. He earned his juris doctor degree from Yale Law School in 1976 after graduating from Princeton University in 1972. A native of New Jersey, he is 55 years old.

President Bush selects Samuel Alito

This morning President George W. Bush nominated Samuel Alito to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Since 1990, Judge Alito has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit.

During his two campaigns for President, George W. Bush continually promised that if given the opportunity he would appoint justices to the Supreme Court who would strictly interpret the Constitution and not legislate from the bench. He fulfilled that promise by nominating Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. Judge Alito is well-known throughout the legal system as well-versed in constitutional law and is extremely qualified because of his public service as a judge, Deputy Assistant Attorney General under President Reagan, and as a U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey.

Judge Alito is widely known for dissenting in Planned Parenthood vs. Casey. Planned Parenthood vs. Casey held that Pennsylvania could not require women to inform their husbands before getting abortions.

Right to Life of Michigan will continue to share information on Judge Samuel Alito and his nomination to the Supreme Court of the United States at www.rtl.org. We look forward to learning more about this nominee during the upcoming Senate hearings.
Senate to Vote on Embryonic Stem Cell Research Funding, Your Calls Needed
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- After it returns from its Independence Day recess the week of July 10, the U.S. Senate is preparing to vote on using your federal tax money to pay for embryonic stem cell research. Under the claim that the unproven research will eventually cure patients, Congress wants to use your money to pay for science that involves the destruction of human life.
It is important that you take a few minutes between now and the week of July 10 to make your voice heard in opposition to HR 810 in the Senate.
You can quickly find addresses, phone numbers, and email contact information for your two senators by going to
Please contact your senators immediately and urge strong opposition to HR 810 and paying for embryonic stem cell research with taxpayer funds. Please also pass along this action alert to your pro-life friends and family and ask them to follow up on it.
If your senator holds any public meetings in your area during the recess, be sure to attend and voice your opposition to the bill. These in-person meetings can be a great way to make your senator aware of your position.
The Senate will also vote on two pro-life bills when it returns.
One measure will ban the practice known as "fetal farming." That's where scientists specifically create human embryos for the sole purpose of destroying them for their stem cells. Another measure encourages the federal government to fund research into alternatives ways to obtain embryonic stem cells without destroying human life.
Again, contact your senators and urge the following:
1. Vote against HR 810 and against using taxpayer funds to pay for embryonic stem cell research.
2. Vote for the Brownback-Santorum bill to ban "fetal farming."
3. Vote for the Santorum-Specter bill to find alternative methods of obtaining embryonic stem cells that don't destroy human life.
You can use the following factsheet for your own information, to help you craft an email to your senators or to pass on to friends and family:
Myths and Facts on Embryonic Stem Cell Research
Myth: Embryonic stem cell research is curing patients and doing a better job than the use of adult stem cells.
Fact: Embryonic stem cell research has not only yet to cure a single human patient, but it has never been tried on humans because of failures in animal testing. On the other hand, adult stem cells have already produced 70 cures or treatments for various conditions including various cancers such as breast cancer, lymphomas, leukemia, arthritis, heart damage, Parkinson’s, Sickle Cell Anemia and other disorders. (See ).
Myth: Embryonic stem cell research has the potential to cure Alzheimer's patients like President Ronald Reagan.
Fact: Leading researchers say stem cell research will not likely yield cures for Alzheimer's. "Alzheimer's is a more global disease, with an effect on numerous kinds of cells," Steve Stice, a stem cell researcher at the University of Georgia, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper. "That makes it much more difficult for a cell therapy to be effective." Marilyn Albert, a Johns Hopkins University researcher, adds, "I just think everybody feels there are higher priorities for seeking effective treatments for Alzheimer's disease and for identifying preventive strategies."
Myth: An overwhelming majority of Americans want to spend federal funds on embryonic stem cell research.
Fact: The most recent poll on the subject, conducted by International Communications Research in mid-May, finds 48% of Americans oppose federal funding of stem cell research that requires destroying human embryos. Just 39% support such funding and another 12 percent had no position. The ICR survey found 57% favored funding only the research avenues that do not harm the donor. Just 24% favored funding all stem cell research, including the type that involves destroying human embryos.
Contact Congress on Pending Pro Life Legislation!
NARAL has been busy pushing its radical, pro-abortion agenda.

The group recently released its Who Decides report, an interactive and comprehensive overview of abortion laws in all 50 states. The report gives "grades" to each state based on how pro-abortion its laws are.

In a radically alarmist email sent last Friday, NARAL said that "anti-choice leaders" are "cooking up state-level schemes behind your back" and that the Who Decides report is designed to "derail their plans." See the full report here.

NARAL and Other Side groups are always "crying wolf!" They want Americans to believe that any pro-life laws passed will mean enormous "suffering" for women everywhere. But we know pro-life laws are a vital means of protecting women and promoting the culture of life.

So please take a moment to read about and take action on pending pro-life legislation in Congress. Your Senators and Representatives must hear from you on these critical bills!
January 16, 2006

Sincerely,
Senate Vote on Several Stem Cell Measures Expected Soon!

In the coming weeks a group of stem cell bills is scheduled to come before the Senate for a vote! It is vital that you contact your Senators and tell them to support the President’s policy and vote NO on any bills that federally fund the destruction of human life!

The unethical Castle/Specter Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act expands destructive embryo stem cell research, and already passed in the House in May! It must not pass in the Senate! Call your Senators and urge them to reject the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act and instead support ethical research on adult stem cells. We have a list of talking points ready for you.

Here are the facts:

Already, thousands of people with 65 different diseases have been successfully treated and cured with adult stem cells, which are obtained ethically.
Embryonic stem cell research has led to zero cures for life- threatening diseases such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s, yet pro-abortion groups ignore this important fact.
Alarmingly, recent studies show that embryonic stem cells tend to mutate and cause normal cells to grow quickly, transforming them into tumor-forming cancer cells.

This bill does not make research using embryonic stem cells legal. Private companies and researchers already conduct such research with their own money. This fight is about using federal dollars- YOUR MONEY- to fund life destructive research. Email your senators and tell them you do not want your taxpayer dollars supporting the unethical destruction of embryos in that name of science!

Scientists are making discoveries daily using adult stem cells. Adult stem cells from sources like umbilical cord blood have already successfully treated 65 conditions ranging from Leukemia to Sickle-Cell Anemia! Everyday, scientists are discovering more and more using adult stem cells.

President Bush has repeatedly promised to veto this bill, and any bill that destroys human life.

This bill would support and encourage a line of research that requires the intentional destruction of living human embryos for the derivation of their cells. Destroying nascent human life for research raises serious ethical problems and millions of Americans consider this practice immoral.

Write to your Senators and tell them to support the President’s position and reject any bill that allows human-embryo destructive research!

In addition to opposing embryo-destructive research, there will be an opportunity to support legislation that protects innocent human life. The Senate will also vote on the Human Cloning Prohibition Act (S. 658), sponsored by pro-life Senator Sam Brownback.

Cloning creates human embryos for the sole purpose of destroying them. Human cloning is already being practiced in countries around the world. In South Korea, scientists have already cloned human embryos, only to destroy them.

The House has already passed the Human Cloning Prohibition Act (S. 659) twice. Now is the time for the Senate to take action! Write to your Senators and urge them to support the Human Cloning Prohibition Act!

Even the United Nations passed a universal human cloning ban. It’s time the Senate passes this bill so the President can sign it into law!

Thank you for fighting the battle to protect innocent human life.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Bingham Executive Director Susan B. Anthony List http://www.sba-list.org/

P.S. Call your Senators to oppose federal funding of embryo-destructive stem cell research! See our list of talking points prepared for you.

Do Not Fund Destructive Embryo Research
As early as the week of July 11, the U.S. Senate is expected to vote on a bill authorizing use of federal funds to encourage the destruction of live human embryos for stem cell research. From July 2 to July 10 the Senate is scheduled to be in recess. This time is an excellent opportunity for pro-life leaders to schedule meetings with Senators in their state offices.

Destroying human embryos to obtain embryonic stem cells is both immoral and unnecessary. Stem cells from adult tissues, umbilical cord blood, and other morally acceptable sources are already producing treatments for diseases. Embryonic stem cells have yet to benefit any human patient. See: Stem Cell Research. Please note the "New Resources" section. For other resources online also HERE.

Administration Policy:
President Bush’s policy limits federal funding of embryonic stem cell research to stem cells already derived from embryos as of August 9, 2001.

House Action:
On May 24, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 238-194 to pass the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (H.R. 810). That measure would rescind Administration policy so that new embryos, initially created for reproduction, can be killed for federally funded stem cell research if their parents give consent. President Bush has stated that if H.R. 810 reached his desk, he would veto it. See: H.R.810. House support for H.R. 810 fell well short of the two-thirds vote needed to override a veto.

Senate Bill:
A bill identical to H.R. 810 has been introduced in the Senate. On February 28, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) introduced S. 471. Supporters of destructive embryo research are continuing to wage a skillful and well-funded legislative campaign. It is extremely important that Senators with pro-life and mixed voting records be urged to vote against S. 471. The measure has 40 cosponsors. Please check for your Senators HERE.

ACTION:
In addition to local meetings during the Independence Day recess (see above), all pro-life constituents should contact their two Senators by FAX letter, e-mail, and phone. Activate phone trees. Call the U. S. Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121, or call your Senators’ local offices. For access to full contact information, see: nchla.org/contcong.asp. Also, through NCHLA’s Action Center, a person can send an e-mail directly to their Senators at: nchla.org/actiondisplay.asp?ID=233.

MESSAGE:
"Please vote 'no' on S. 471. Destroying human embryos for research purposes is immoral and unnecessary. Please support stem cell research that does not harm or destroy human life at any stage."

WHEN:
During the week of July 11, the Senate may vote on S. 471.
Please act now! Thanks!
PLEASE JOIN NEBRASKANS UNITED FOR LIFE AND RESCUE THE HEARTLAND PRAYER AND PICKET OF DR. PETER SINGER

When: THURSDAY, JUNE 16 PICKET STARTS AT 6:30 PM

Where: Scott Conference Center -6450 Pine Street (South UNO Campus, former Ak-Sar-Ben field area)

Why: We are protesting Peter Singer because he believes that disabled babies can, indeed sometimes should, be killed if their lives are "not worth living" but that any baby, disabled or not, can legitimately be killed if the utilitarian calculus requires it, babies just are not "persons" in the first place. Peter Singer believes "life only begins in the morally significant sense when there is awareness of one's existence..." If human beings have "awareness of their own existence", they are candidates for "personhood". But they must also have "rationality." If they are "rational and self-aware", they are persons", and so are "morally significant", that is, their lives should at least be taken seriously in the utilitarian calculus. He thinks "infants lack these characteristics. Killing them, therefore, cannot be equated with killing normal human beings. "Killing a snail or a day-old infant does not thwart any desires of this kind (for the future), because snails and newborn infants are incapable of having such desires."

Dear Friends,

The pro-life movement in Nebraska achieved a significant victory today in our effort to seek public funding for pregnancy support services. Sen. Mike Foley introduced and fought for an amendment to the state’s budget bill to use $500,000 of federal funds ($250,000 per year for two years) for pregnancy support services. The intent is to use this funding to start a pilot program (probably in the Omaha metro area) emulating a very successful Pennsylvania program called Real Alternatives (www.realalternatives.org) which funds agencies that provide alternatives to abortion services.

There were two votes on this amendment. Vote number one was on whether to adopt the amendment. This vote passed with 25-yeas, 10-nays, and 11-present but not voting (3 senators were excused). The second vote (offered by Sen. DiAnna Schimek who opposed the amendment) was to reconsider the first vote (this is a tactic typically used by those who oppose a measure that just passed). The second vote failed with 14-yeas, 27-nays, 5-present but not voting (3 senators were excused).

Please check below to see how your senator voted. If he/she voted for the Foley amendment (AM 1374) to LB 425, (and against the motion to reconsider) please e-mail them with a note of thanks. If he/she voted against the Foley amendment (and for the motion to reconsider), please e-mail them with a polite note of disappointment.

Please continue to pray for this effort so that as the bureaucratic process to develop and administer this program moves forward, it will remain true to the pro-life intent of the funding and will ultimately be successful and expanded statewide.
Our Mother’s Day Ad tradition continues!

We are proud of this years theme, Women in "at-risk pregnancy", which was chosen to encourage and offer our support for those moms, whose own health / physical problems or their baby's can be very distressing. We realize how much more difficult living ones pro-life philosophy is, in a society that says, " you need not sacrifice yourself now or in the future for this pregnancy. The quick and easy answer is ABORTION".
Thanks to all mothers who choose life!
Loving life had the pleasure to interview Vicki Thorn, Ex. Director, Project Rachel.

Project Rachel is a post-abortion healing ministry of the Catholic Church. It was founded in 1984 in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee by Vicki Thorn.

Thorn devoted her life to helping those affected by abortion. She is trained in spirituality, psychology and pre-natal loss facilitation; she has received numerous awards, including the Vatican II award for service to society in 2001. She has spoken in Washington, Maryland and Northern Virginia, sharing what Father Michael Taylor, chaplain and assistant principal, called a "tremendous message of both mercy and healing."

Project Rachel is the name of the Catholic Church's healing ministry to those who have been involved in abortion. Its name comes from Scripture:

In Ramah is heard the sound of moaning, of bitter weeping!
Rachel mourns her children,
she refuses to be consoled
because her children are no more.

Thus says the LORD:
Cease your cries of mourning,
wipe the tears from your eyes.
The sorrow you have shown shall have its reward...
There is hope for your future.

Jeremiah 31:15-1

Project Rachel operates as a network of professional counselors and priests, all trained to provide one-on-one spiritual and psychological care for those who are suffering because of an abortion. Although most dioceses use the name Project Rachel, some programs are named differently. In addition to individualized counseling, some programs include support groups and retreats. Founded in 1984 by Victoria Thorn in Milwaukee, today Project Rachel programs can be found in 140 Catholic dioceses in the United States, as well as in dioceses in other countries.

A single phone call to a Project Rachel program (see map--LINK) puts you in touch with those who can help. Also, the National Office of Post-Abortion Reconciliation and Healing (NOPARH) sponsors a nation-wide referral service for those seeking help after abortion. For a referral contact NOPARH at 800.5WE.CARE, or access its website at www.marquette.edu/rachel.

In addition, Rachel's Vineyard is a retreat program which helps those suffering after abortion in a group setting, usually over a weekend. Retreats often are sponsored by local Project Rachel offices, as well as counseling centers and retreat houses. For information or retreat schedules contact www.rachelsvineyard.org or call 1-877-HOPE-4-ME.

Vicki Thorn, Founder and Director of the National Office of Post Abortion Reconciliation and Healing on "Healing the Wounds of Abortion."

This is a workshop on the psychological and spiritual aftermath of abortion and the process of healing for those who are hurting from an abortion experience.

Some of the topics covered are:
# Wounds of Generation X
# Biochemistry of pregnancy and sex
# Teen decision-making and abortion
# Dealing with newly aborted women
# Impact of abortion on fathers, siblings and others
# The process of healing.

This event will take place on Tuesday, March 14th, 2006 at the Blessed John XXIII Center, at 3700 Sheridan Boulevard, in Lincoln, Nebraska from 10am to 4pm. The workshop is only $20 per person and includes lunch.

An alternative session will be held from 7:30am to 9am as a breakfast discussion for those unable to attend the all day workshop.
Topics: teen brain research and the role of stress in the abortion decision, followed by an open forum on post-abortion aftermath.
The cost for the breakfast session is only $5 (includes light breakfast).

CEU's available to social workers and licensed mental health practitioners.

For more information, please all 402-477-7517 or e-mail gregschlepp@alltel.net.
Loving life had the pleasure to interview Jim Pinto from PriestsForLife.org and Sanctity of Life Ministries.

Jim Pinto discussed the suspension of the Summit Abortion Clinic License in Alabama.

# ADPH Summit order of license suspension.

"This is Jim Pinto of Birmingham Alabama.
I had the privilege of breaking this news to the media. I am a long time activist here and when I received the information from one of our Sidewalk Counselors and the official state document, wrote my release (see PDF file) and got the word out.

I continue to work with the media and local officials on the story. More women are coming forward. The story is gaining national attention.

We must be clear in our reporting that: This Mill's license is 'suspended' and not 'revoked.' The hearing for final removal of license or reinstatement is set for June 20th in Montgomery. This is an opportunity for all pro-lifers to get involved in closing a mill(emails, letters, calls-see information at the end of my press release for Dr. Williamson) We need to get the word out."

On Wednesday, June 14th, 2006, Jim Pinto sent the following communication to us:

"This Clinic Is Closed. Summit Medical Center Birmingham Relinquishes License To State Officials In High Profile Case. Activist Calls for Further Action.

Birmingham, AL. June 14: Jim Pinto, Founder of Sanctity of Life Ministries and Pastoral Associate with Priests for Life and Her Choice Birmingham, and Pro-life activist for over 26 years in Birmingham made the following statement regarding Summit’s relinquishing of its license before the revocation hearing date set for, June 22nd.

The Alabama Department of Public Health recently suspended Summits License due to gross malpractice. A woman was told she was 6 weeks pregnant, given RU486-chemical abortion, by a non physician, while her blood pressure was dangerously high. We next hear of this woman "presented to the emergency room of a Birmingham hospital with the head of a baby protruding. While at the hospital (she) delivered a stillborn, macerated, six pound, four ounce baby."

While we commend the Alabama Dept. of Health for its intervention in this case and rejoice that this place of death to babies and danger to women is closed, there is more work that needs to be done:

-I call upon all Christians and people of good will to lament the brutal death of this precious child and the thousands who have suffered a similar end in this mill. I ask us all to offer to this woman, and all like her, the post-abortion healing and charity she needs. We also make known to woman in Crisis pregnancy that the resources and support you need are here for you-You are not alone!

-I am inviting all people of good will to join me for a service of "Re-memberance, Celebration, and Commitment to Establish a Culture of Life" on Wednesday, June 21, 11:45 A.M. at the now closed, Summit Medical Center 1801 14th Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35205.

-The Physician/Abortionist and Nurse who oversaw this malpractice and murder of this full term human being should be further investigated and have their licenses to practice medicine revoked immediately by the Board of Medical Licensure. We also offer to them the mercy and healing that God desires for them.

-We call upon the District Attorney, Tenth Judicial Circuit of Alabama, David Barber, to investigate criminal charges in the killing of a full term baby which is in direct violation of our Fetal Viability Law, not to mention the Moral Law. The records of the Summit should be handed over to the proper authorities for further investigation into violation of laws, malpractice, and abortion injuries.

-We call upon the A.D.P.H. and other responsible State officials to investigate immediately any charges brought against Alabama Abortion Clinics who are violating State laws and medical standards that these Clinics are charged to maintain.

-I express gratitude to Christians throughout the Country who prayed and contacted the authorities in Alabama.

Jim Pinto's ministry on behalf of the Gospel of Life is rooted in Birmingham, Alabama and extends throughout the United States." (End of his message 06/14/2006)
"Violation of Law by Alabama Abortion Industry Leads to Women Receiving Misinformation, Injury and Death.
Jim Pinto's Biography provided by PriestsForLife.org:

By the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit, Jim has lived and proclaimed the Gospel of Life for over 25 years. The truth of the Incarnation - the “infleshment” of God with us in Jesus - has made a profound impact on his life and ministry. Solidarity with the pre-born, minorities and the disenfranchised has led Jim and his family to live a sacramental lifestyle among the people they serve and to invite others to do likewise. Jim has been recognized locally, statewide and nationally for his work in proclaiming good news to the poor, reconciliation among the races and defending the sacredness and dignity of every human being. He was selected as the “Outstanding Young Religious Leader of Alabama,” served as a priest in the Anglican Tradition for over 20 years and entered into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church in 2003.

Known for his ability to communicate the Gospel passionately and effectively, Jim has been a featured speaker in schools, churches, television and radio, addressing the issues of Christianity and culture. He has authored numerous articles and essays among them: “Becoming Christ in the City, ” “Another Letter From the Birmingham Jail,” “The Sacredness of Human Life and the Least” and “The Theology of the Face.” Jim also coordinates the Priests for Life Study Guide Series.

Jim has been at the center of the founding or developing of numerous ministries in Greater Birmingham including: Habitat for Humanity, The Grace House/Village for Girls, Restoration Academy, Her Choice Crisis Pregnancy Center and the Sanctity of Life Ministries. Jim directs the Missionary of the Gospel of Life-Lay Association with hundreds of affiliates throughout the Country. The equipping of God’s people (lay, ordained, youth and adult) for the work of ministry at the dawn of the new millennium is a call he believes incumbent upon him.

Born and raised in Hudson County, New Jersey, he was a member of the All County Football Team in H.S., and the All Conference Team in College. Jim received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Kean University, N.J., and a Masters of Divinity Degree from Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry, Ambridge, Pennsylvania. He and his wife Joy have been married for 29 years; and are blessed with four children and seven grandchildren. The Pintos live in Fairfield-Birmingham, Alabama and are members of St. Francis of Assisi
James J. Pinto, Jr. Pastoral Associate, Priests for Life Coordinator: Missionaries-Lay Association http://www.sanctityoflifeministries.org/
Catholic Church, a parish begun by Franciscans in 1940 with a special call to the African American community. The Pintos consider their marriage and family first priority in authenticating their faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church.

Jim’s chief desire is to be a man who does what is in the heart and mind of God. He seeks to live his life in abandonment to the Holy Trinity knowing that: “he who saves his life will lose it and he who loses his life will find it.” He continually is looking for the Face of God in every face, especially the pre-born, the aged, widow, orphan, alien, and the helpless, believing what Nicholas of Cusa stated: “In all faces is seen the Face of faces, veiled and in a riddle.”
PARAYER TO CLOSE ABORTION MILLS

Father, all life is in your care.
You have entrusted us to one another
that we may show our btothers and sister
the same love You have for us.
We pray then for the least among us,
the children in the womb,
Protect them from the violence of abortion.
We ppray for those who are scheduled to dia at
WOMEN'S SERVICES, O.C. IN OMAHA.
Save them from death.

Give new hope to their parents that they may
turn away from the desperate act of abortion.
Grant conversion to DR. C. J. LABENZ.
and his staff.
Show us how we are to respond to the
bloodshed in our midst.
And lead us to the day when this place of death
will be transformed into a haven of life.
Guard us with your joy and your peace,
for in You, life is victorious.
We pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lard.
Amen.
PRAYERS FOR LIFE:
Lord Jesus,
on the night before you died, you said, "This is my body, given up for your." With these words, you teach us the meaning of love. Your love for us brought you to the cross, to give your life for us. We, too, are called to give our lives for our brothers and sisters.

Lord,
we also hear these words, "This is my body," used by those who think they can take life, just because that life is growing within their bodies. We hear these words distorted by those who support abortion. Grant that all your people may learn that human fulfillment is never found by pushing someone else out of the way but only and always by yielding our private interest to a greater good.

DEAR GOD,
by whose Will I live and breathe this day
and by whose Grace I have the opportunity to daily earn my way to life with You in Heaven
provide in abundance to all your children the understanding that all life is of You,
and from You,
from conception until the time we are called to live joyfully with you forever.
Amen.

Most loving and merciful Father,
I offer this prayer for those women and men whose hearts and souls have been wounded by the tragedy of abortion.
With your loving grace,
penetrate the wall of denial and hurt that separates them from You
so that they may know and experience the healing power of Your limitless mercy and love.
I ask this through Christ our Lord,
Amen.

Join us in prayer at the abortion mills
Saturday mornings at 6:30 on 46th & Douglas or both 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. on Mission Ave. in Bellevue. These are times when you can pray with a group.
On Assisted Suicide (Euthanasia)

# Schiavo battle changed attorney’s view of abortion:
'In many ways, it’s the other end of the abortion debate, frankly,' Anderson said, admitting she has completely changed her mind on the issue of abortion, despite having defended the practice since she was a young woman.
'Once you really examine the evidence and take a cold, hard look at it, it’s almost inescapable that killing a baby is not a solution,' Anderson said. 'Killing babies is not the way out of social problems or personal problems. Killing off your elderly or disabled is not the way to keep your healthcare budget in balance.'

# Schiavo's Parents Vow to Keep Up Fight:
By SAM HANANEL
The Associated Press
Thursday, March 30, 2006; 8:02 PM
WASHINGTON -- One day before the first anniversary of Terri Schiavo's death, her family came to the nation's capital with a pledge to keep fighting 'the growing culture of euthanasia.'

# Cambodia deports American over 'Euthanasia cafe':
PHNOM PENH (AFP) - Cambodia has deported an American for running websites that promoted the impoverished kingdom as a destination for people who wanted to end their lives.
'We deported him this morning at 10 am because the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received a lot of complaints from many diplomats from other countries,' the deputy chief of national police, General Sok Phal said Saturday.
'Unlike what he said, Cambodia is not a place where foreigners can come to commit suicide.'
Californian Roger Graham, 57, who owned the Blue Mountain Coffee and Internet Cafe in the quiet coastal backwater of Kampot, had advertised his avid support of euthanasia, or mercy killing, on his websites (Website names not shown).

# Euthanasia probe continuing in New Orleans, NPR reports:
NEW ORLEANS (BP)An investigation continues into allegations of euthanasia in the days immediately following Hurricane Katrina, when New Orleans hospitals were surrounded by water and conditions were dire with little hope of evacuating patients. National Public Radio has reported that it gained access to court documents that reveal eyewitness accounts of what happened during those days.
The documents, not yet released to the public, shed light on an investigation by the Louisiana attorney general’s office of doctors and nurses at Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans, where rumors indicate patients were given lethal doses of medicine because no end to their suffering was in sight.
Though more than 70 witnesses have been subpoenaed by investigators and massive amounts of evidence are being assessed, no one has yet been charged and no one has confirmed seeing doctors or nurses actually administer lethal drugs, NPR said.

# Netherlands allows 'baby euthanasia':
GRONINGEN, Netherlands, March 4 (UPI) -- In the next few weeks, the Netherlands will become the first country to allow the euthanasia of young children with incurable illness.
A committee will be formed to decide when 'baby euthanasia' is warranted, the Times of London reported.
Eduard Verhagen, clinical director of pediatrics at the University Medical Centre in Groningen, has admitted participating in four 'assisted neo-natal terminations.' He has drawn up a protocol that has been adopted by the government, saying euthanasia can be considered only in cases with 'unbearable suffering,' with parental consent and consultation with other doctors.

# Oregon Law May Pave Way for More States:
PORTLAND, Ore. - After more than a decade of legal battles over assisted suicide, a Supreme Court ruling affirming that states have the authority to regulate medical treatment of the terminally ill may help turn an Oregon law into a national model.

# Status of assisted-suicide initiatives:
The Associated Press
A ruling Tuesday by the Supreme Court offered protection for Oregon's one-of-a-kind assisted-suicide law. Some other states where assisted-suicide proposals have been discussed:
CALIFORNIA A bill to allow doctor-assisted suicide comes up for a vote in March in the Assembly's Judiciary Committee. Likely facing defeat, backers of the bill had suspended their efforts to win legislative approval of the measure last June.
VERMONT Backers of assisted suicide tried unsuccessfully to bring a proposed law to a vote in the Legislature last year. A similar death-with-dignity bill was filed this year and awaits action.
CONNECTICUT A bill was introduced in the General Assembly last year dealing with assisted suicide in response to the prosecution of a man who helped a friend with terminal cancer kill himself. The bill did not survive last year's legislative session.
HAWAII In 2002, Hawaii came within just three votes of becoming the second state to allow doctor-assisted suicide. Similar bills have stalled in the Legislature since then.
MAINE Voters in 2000 narrowly rejected a proposal to allow physician-assisted suicide. Similar proposals were rejected by the state Legislature four times before supporters launched an initiative drive that forced the proposal to the ballot.
MICHIGAN A law enacted in 1998 made physician-assisted suicide a felony. Voters later that year soundly defeated a ballot measure that would have made assisted suicide legal under certain guidelines and in effect overturn the Legislature's ban.
WASHINGTON Voters in 1991 rejected a proposal to allow doctor-assisted suicide. The measure would have overturned an existing ban on the practice.

# Oregon assisted suicide law upheld:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday blocked the Bush administration's attempt to punish doctors who help terminally ill patients die, protecting Oregon's one-of-a-kind assisted-suicide law. It was the first loss for Chief Justice John Roberts, who joined the court's most conservative members -- Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas -- in a long but restrained dissent.
Endorsed Candidate
Paula Pfizer For Nebraska Board of Education

Paula Pfizer was born and raised in Lexington, Nebraska. She is married to Barry Pfister. Barry is a farmer and I am a housewife. We are the parents of four boys and one girl. We are the proud grandparents of one granddaughter and this summer we will have two more grandchildren. My three older boys attended public school and my last two had the opportunity to attend Christian school for six years. We attend the Lexington Berean Church.

I have been following the changes in education for the past 15 years. I believe we need to get back to phonics, to teach math, bring civics back so children can understand the meaning of being a proud American. We need to get rid of ESL and make English the first language. We need to remove the comprehensive sex education and turn sex teaching back to the parents. The federal government gives us 7% of our education funding and they have a 100% control. No Child Left Behind is Goals 2000 just renamed. I do not believe a child should be left behind that's why they given grades.

I have served on the Education Service Unit Board for 8 years.
I would like to serve you on the State Board of Education.

Thank You,
Paula Pfister
